Camouflage dye with 5% or 10% dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is a topical self-tanning product used to temporarily darken skin, primarily for cosmetic camouflage of conditions like vitiligo, scars, or uneven pigmentation. DHA, a three-carbon sugar, reacts with amino acids in the skin’s stratum corneum via the Maillard reaction, producing melanoidins that create a brown, tan-like appearance within 6–12 hours. The 5% concentration yields a lighter tan, suitable for fair skin, while 10% provides a darker shade, better for deeper skin tones or more pronounced camouflage. The effect lasts 5–10 days, fading with natural skin exfoliation. Apply evenly to clean, exfoliated skin; avoid mucous membranes to prevent irritation. It offers no UV protection, so sunscreen is essential. Safe for most users, it’s FDA-approved but may cause mild irritation in sensitive individuals.
